Originally from Georgia, J. R. Willis traveled and painted portraits and landscapes in the Southeastern U.S. He went to New York in 1908 to study art. In 1931, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and is best known for his Indian paintings and Southwestern landscapes.
